Etymology

Small (Romance diminutive - illa) genévrier (Celtic iuppo ). or Formed on the name of a Roman villa established on the site of Jupille: " Iovis villa" (Villa dedicated to Jupiter). " Iovis villa" > " Iovilla" > " Iopilla" > " Iupilla" > " Jupilla" > " Jupille".

History

Jupille probably exists thanks to its ideal geographical location, on a plate dominating the Meuse and at the point of meeting between the river and the road axis Tongres - Trier, very important during the Roman epoch.

Excavations made it possible to find the traces of a Gallo-Roman villa probably dating from the 1st and 2nd century after J-C.

Documents the 8th century evoke the presence of a residence of the Carolingian sovereigns.

One finds the traces of Jupille through the centuries under various orthographies: Iopiliensis (687), Jopila (714), Jobvilla (756), Jopilla (868), Iopilla (888), Juppille (1504).

Jupille was, with Herstal, the place of residence of a good part of the dynasty of the Mérovingiens and Carolingiens, of which some of most famous: Pip of Herstal, Charles Martel, Pip the Brief and Charlemagne.

Excavations are always in hand for if required determining the birthplace of Charlemagne.
