Junquera

Jonquera is a locality of Spain located in area of Catalogne and Province of Gérone.

It at low prices owes its dynamism with the border trade, it since the Années 1950. It is also about a principal stage for the road drivers by the number of infrastructures set up with their intention (road service stations and restaurants, but also closed houses). Its situation privileged on the axis Barcelona   -   Montpellier takes part in this dynamism. The Spanish part of the frontier village Perthus depends administratively on Junquera.

History

The Neolithic time with left in Jonquera of the monuments megalithic: dolmens, menhirs, in the zones of Farmhouse Baleta, els Estanys, Canadal, Requesens and Sant Father of Pla of Arca.

At the time Roman, both Roman ways, the Way Domitienne which crossed the the Pyrenees to the Collar of the Perthus (Collar of Panissars) and the Via Augusta met in Jonquera.

With the the Middle Ages, the habitat appears very dispersed, without any concentration huamine (village or city).

In 1453 a charter of settlement is granted to Jonquera. At that time, Jonquera was consisted two urbanized and well differentiated centers: forced (pregnant strengthened) and a district out the walls, but concerning the precedent.

The Peace of the Pyrenees, signed in 1659 by monarchies Spanish and French, marked the local history of Jonquera. The transfer of the Roussillon to the France and the fixing of the new border according to the chain of the Pyrenees converted Jonquera into a frontier village.

Monuments and Places

  • Parish church of Santa Maria , completed in 1791. The frontage is the only element which is preserved of the old building built at the beginning of XVe century.

  • Castle of Rocabertí . This castle is at the top of a granitic piton in the north of Santa Llúcia. One can see remainders of the gate of entry, of a triangular tower and those of the vault dedicated to Sant Romà.
  • Château of Requesens was rebuilt at the end of the XIXe century by the count de Peralada Tomàs de Rocabertí-Dameto (death in 1898) and was completed by his/her sister Joanna Aldelaida. it was inaugurated on June 24th, 1899.
  • Château of Canadal preserves remainders of fortification of XIVe and XVe centuries. It belonged to the goods of the Viscounts of Rocabertí. Currently, it shelters a restaurant.
  • Ca Armet , large house of Main street.
  • Turns , one in the east and the other in the west.
