Julius Nepos

Flavius Julius Nepos (v. 430 - 480) is Roman Emperor of Occident of June 474 with August 475. Wire of Nepotianus, he is the nephew by alliance of the empress Aelia Verina, wife of Leon I {{er}} the emperor of the East.

Nepos controls the Dalmatie with Salone, when in 474 the emperor of the East Zénon names it César with mission of reversing Glycerius, considered like illegitimate by Zénon. Nepos unloads with Ravenne, continues and captures Glycérius in the vicinity of Rome, the fact tonsurer and to name bishop. As often the soldiers concluded the successfully do it, its army proclaims it emperor of Occident the June 24th 474. He will be the last Roman Emperor of Occident recognized by the Roman Empire of the East.

But Nepos misses supports in Occident, and is badly seen Romans who do not appreciate this foreign Greek. Nepos gives order to its general Flavius Oreste to return de Gaulle to Italy. Oreste benefits from it to reverse Nepos the August 28th 475. Nepos cannot await any help of Constantinople, in prey with the palace revolutions of 475 and 476; it re-embarks precipitately and turns over in Dalmatie.

In 477, after the dismissal of Romulus Augustule, Nepos requests the assistance of Zénon to recover its throne with Ravenne, but Zénon, with the catches with the Ostrogoths, cannot anything for him.

Nepos dies assassinated on May 9th 480 close to Salone, at the instigation of the Glycerius bishop who is avenged thus for his dismissal.
