Julius Brefeld Oscar

Julius Oscar Brefeld is a Botaniste and a German mycologist , born the August 19th 1839 in Westphalia and dead the January 12th 1925 with Schlachtensee.

After studies of Pharmacy, it becomes, in 1863, the assistant of Heinrich Anton de Bary (1831-1888) at the university of Halle. It obtains its doctorate in 1868, but must stop its studies after severe a Pneumonie. In 1873, he becomes lecturer at the university of Berlin. In 1876, it is approved privat docent (it gives courses without being paid) at the forest school of Eberswalde. In 1882, he is professor of Botanique and director of the Botanical garden of Münster.

It Marie in 1896 and starts to develop a Glaucome. In 1898, he becomes professor of botany at the university of Breslau (today Wrocław in Poland). In 1900, it loses the use of an eye. Two years later, his wife dies and Brefeld resigns of its station of Breslau. In 1910, it loses the sight completely, but it continues nevertheless to work by dictating its observations.

Brefeld is famous for its development of techniques of setting in culture of mushrooms on gelatin.
