Biography
Julio César Chávez spends professional on February 5th, 1980, after only 15 combat amateurs. Until September 13rd, 1984, there remains unknown, having mainly fought in Mexico. This day, after 43 victorious combat, including 36 before the limit, he faces Mario Martinez for the world title WBC of the super-feathers. He gains the combat by KB with the eighth round, and seizes its first world title.It defends 9 times its title, before knowing problems of weight. It then chooses to give up its title and to fight in light weights.
Thus, on November 21st 1987, it puts KB, in eleven rounds, Edwin Rosario, and seizes the championship of the world WBA of the light ones. After a victorious defense, it unifies its title WBA with that of the WBC by beating Jose Luis Ramirez, another star Mexican, on October 29th, 1988.
Its reign at the light weights is of short duration. As of its following combat, it passes into light-welterweight, facing Roger Mayweather on May 13rd, 1989, for world title WBC. It carries it by KB with the tenth round, and became thus world champion in a third category.
After 2 victorious defenses, it reaches a true recognition when on March 17th, 1990, in a palpitating combat, it puts KB Meldrick Taylor at 9 seconds of the term of the combat, thus preserving its crown WBC and seizing title IBF of Taylor. This combat is the top of its career. It enables him to be recognized by the American public and to perceive better premiums for its engagements.
After 8 new victorious defenses of its titles, and even if it were relieved of its crown IBF in March 1991, Chávez attacks world title WBC of the welterweights, held by Pernell Whitaker, on September 10th, 1993, but obtains only one tie.
After a new defense into light-welterweight, he faced the quasi unknown one, Frankie Randall, on January 29th, 1994. He is beaten at the points, with surprised of the public, but not of those which knew its lifestyle. Chávez gains revenge, on May 7th, 1994, and recovers its title. It still defends it to four rreprises. But on June 7th, 1996, it is beaten by Oscar of Hoya by KB with the fourth round. It had been presented for the combat out of form and with a wound to the arcade, which explains its defeat.
It obtains all the same the occasion to become again world champion, on March 7th, 1998 against Miguel Angel Gonzalez, for title WBC of the light-welterweight ones, but the combat ends in a tie.
September 18th, 1998, Chávez finds Of Hoya, but this time for title WBC of the welterweights. Compared to their first combat, the conditions are different: Chávez was well involved but its age (36 years for him compared with the 25 of Hoya) plays against him. In spite of its technique, it is too much slow to beat Of Hoya, which puts it KB at the eighth round.
Chávez continues to fight, but without never finding its level. However, on July 29th, 2000, he faces Kostya Tszyu for title WBC of light-welterweight, but is put KB at the sixth round. After a new combat in November 2001, he announces his retirement.
November 24th, 2003, it leaves its retirement to avenge a preceding defeat against Willy Wise, putting it KB in two rounds. In April 2004, Chávez goes up on the boxing ring, for what he again announced like his last service. In this combat, called “Goodbye Mexico and thank you”, it beats at the points its old adversary, Frankie Randall, which had been the first boxer to beat it and send it to the carpet. It still goes up on the boxing ring in May 2005, for a victory at the points.
Chávez holds several records which classify it among the best boxers of the XXe century: greater number of victorious defenses of a world title (27), greater number of championships of the world disputed (37), second plus long series of consecutive victories (89).
