Julio-Claudiens

The dynasty known as Julio-Claudienne is the first of the '' dynasties '' to have reigned on the Roman Empire. The term dynasty is appropriate in spite of appearances of République that Auguste had given to his new mode because the emperors of this dynasty are all resulting from the same family, sometimes in a way moved away certainly.

At the beginning Julio-Claudiens result indeed from two patricians families: the people Julia and the people Claudia . To the first belong the emperors Auguste, Tibère, and Caligula and with the second the emperors Claude and Néron.

Died without posterity, Néron caused the extinction of this dynasty. The capacity passed then to the family of the Flavii .

Durations of the reigns

First Dynastie, installed after the Civil war, the dynasty of Julio-Claudiens benefits from a political situation stabilized and pacified, as well in interior policy as external, which makes it possible to release sufficient forces in spite of the reduction of manpower (of about sixty legions at the end of the civil war, there remains only one small about thirty about it) to try the conquest of the Germanie, carried out by Auguste with for goal to pacify this country and to carry the borders of the Empire until the Elba - countryside which is besides a failure (confer on this subject celebrates it Bataille of Teutoburg, or that of the Brittany, carried out by Claude and his successors).

This stabilized political situation explains the longevity of this dynasty ( 95 years on the whole), as well as the longevity of the emperors in themselves, which reigned respectively:

41 years for Auguste;
23 years for Tibère;
14 years for Néron;
13 years for Claude.
singular Case: 4 years for Caligula.

The come to power

Another characteristic of this dynasty, the emperors all arrived at the capacity in the same way: by dynastic transmission of the crown, as in a Monarchy. Some, like Tibère or Caligula were officially preferred by their predecessor - Tibère was thus associated with Auguste while being equipped with part of the capacities of the Prince.

Claude, him, although family member and successor legitimate late Caligula, was high with the empire by the Prétoriens - acclamation ratified then by the Sénat. Néron reached the capacity under the terms of its relationship with Claude and Auguste (it went down indeed from Auguste and of Marc-Antoine, which is enough cocasse), but capacity him échut also because Britannicus was drawn aside by his/her mother, Agrippine.

Their death

Two emperors died naturally: Auguste and Tibère (the thesis of the assassination of known as the Tibère not achieving the unanimity more).
Two emperors were assassinated: Caligula - because of its madness - and Claude, which barred the road with Néron, and was thus poisoned by Agrippine.
an emperor committed suicide: Néron.
