Julien Maunoir
Julien Maunoir was born on October 1st 1606 with Saint-Georges-with-Reintembault, the north of the diocese of Rennes, and with the borders of Normandy.
He studied with the college of the Jésuites of Rennes starting from 1621. He met there the father Coton, confessor of the king Henri IV become provincial of France, which made it admit with the noviciate of St-Germain of Paris, where he pronounced his wishes in 1627. It studied then with Arrow then in 1630 with college of Quimper, where he solved to learn the Breton one, no matter what its hagiographal said that he had received miraculeusement the gift of the Breton language by an angel in the vault of Ty Mamm Doue to Kerfeunteun, at the time parish bordering on Quimper.
Little before, in November 1630, it accepted the visit of Dom Michel Nobletz which sought a successor and who will indicate it like such ten years later.
Julien Maunoir will perfect his formation with Tours, Bourges, Nevers and Rouen to return to Quimper only in 1640. Seriously sick in Christmas 1636, whereas he believes himself lost, he is seen in dream relating to its shoulders a peasant cornouaillais and decides to be dedicated to the missions in low Brittany in the event of cure, which occurred. It was ordered priest shortly after. In 1641, it begins a first mission with Douarnenez. During 43 years, he traverses the Brittany, of Crozon to Rennes, preaching 439 missions.
In these missions, it made use of the allegorical charts of the Father Michel Nobletz, but it employed two other means to which it gave a great glare: the canticle, Breton or French, and the procession, crowning of the mission, in which it recalled the scenes of the life of Jesus. The parishes ran to these ends of missions where it spoke. Bright conversions, extraordinary cures came to confirm the action of the missionary.
40 000 educated people, 3 000 conversions, such is the assessment drawn up by the P. Maunoir itself for one year.
At the beginning of its missions, the P. Maunoir had one companion, the P. Bernard, but soon some secular priests, ignited by his zeal, assisted it.
The P. Maunoir died in the sorrow after a life of tirednesses and austerity, the January 28th 1683 by preparing a last mission with Plévin.
It was béatifié the March 4th 1951 by pontifical decree of the Pape Pie XII, which makes it happy the May 20th 1951 and raises it with the row of the guards of Brittany.
