Julien Green , born Julian Hartridge Green (September 6th 1900 with Paris - August 13rd 1998 in Paris), is a American writer of French language.

Biography

After the death of his/her mother, a Protestant pious, it converts with the Catholicisme in 1916, following his/her father and of several of his sisters. In 1917, Julien Green engages in the Service of the American ambulances, then in 1918 is detached in French artillery. Demobilized in March 1919, it goes for the first time to the in September 1919 United States and fact of the studies to the University of Virginia, where it writes its first English book.

All the work of Green, which was deeply marked as well by its Homosexualité as by its faith Catholique, is dominated by the question of the faith, the good and the evil, and sexuality. Beside a great number of novels, it published also a newspaper. in 17 volumes between 1926 and 1997, to which the Big wide of the evening is added published on a purely posthumous basis in 2006. Its book If I were you inspired the Psychanalyste Melanie Klein.

He was elected with the French Academy on June 3rd 1971, with the armchair 22, succeeding François Mauriac. Its official reception took place on November 16th 1972. He declared outgoing Academy in 1996, but this one does not choose any successor to him before his disappearance in 1998. As opposed to what one believed, it had French nationality forever a long time: Pompidou had proposed it to him in 1972 after its election with the Academy, but it declined it. It was buried on August 21st 1998 with Klagenfurt (Austria) in the church St Egid. Moved by an old statue by the Virgin Mary at the time of a visit in 1990, the writer wished to be buried in one of the Chapelle S of the church. Julien Green is the adoptive father of the writer Eric Jourdan who filially remained to him faithful until his death.

The whole of its work was rewarded by multiple prices:

  • the national Grand Prix of the Letters, in 1966.
  • the Grand Prix of Literature of the French Academy, in 1970.
  • the Grand Prix of literature of Poland, in 1988.
