Julian Bigelow (born in 1913) is a pioneer of engineering data processing.
Graduate in electric engineering and mathematics of the Massachusetts Institute off Technology, it assists Norbert Wiener in this research on the autonomous control of the missiles anti-aircraft during the Second world war.
He works with Norbert Wiener and Arturo Rosenblueth on one of the articles founder of the Cybernétique and the modern Téléologie, entitled " Behavior, Purpose and Teleology" , published in 1943. This article explains how mechanical, biology and electronic system can interact. It leads to the formation of the teleological company, and the Conférences Macy. Bigelow was an active member of these two organizations.
John von Neumann proposes to him the design of the very first computer to the Institute for Advanced Study of Princeton, and he becomes the principal engineer in 1946 about it on the recommendations of Wiener. Primacy of this computer called " IAS, " on ENIAC is defended by Dyson (1997) but von Neumann did not patent it.
