Julia Mamaea

Julia Mamaea was the younger sister by Julia Soaemias, girl of Julia Maesa and niece of Julia Domna, the wife of Septime Sévère. At the beginning of the IIIe century she married a Roman knight and lived with Arca (Such Arqa, Lebanon) where she put at the world her Alexianus son. After 218, when its nephew Bassianus (the emperor Héliogabale) was proclaimed Auguste and went to reign in Rome with his mother Julia Soaemias and his grandmother Julia Maesa, it also settled in Rome with Alexianus.

In 221, on the insistence of Julia Maesa, Héliogabale adopted his/her Alexianus cousin who became César under the name of Severus Alexander (Alexandre Sévère). When Héliogabale was assassinated with his/her mother in 222, Alexandre Sévère became Auguste. Julia Mamaea, his/her mother, became Augusta.

Initially the empire was in fact directed by the matriarche Julia Maesa. To its death, the capacity returned to the couple mother-wire formed by Julia Mamaea and Alexandre Sévère. This last married a time Orbiane, which was quickly repudiated. Julia Mamaea found in fact the true owner of the empire, never separating from his/her son.

Alexandre Sévère and Julia Mamaea was assassinated in 235 close to Mogontiacum (Mainz, Germany) by a mutiny of the soldiers.
