Julián Herranz Casado

Julián Herranz Casado (March 31st, 1930 -) is a Spanish prelate and a cardinal of the Roman Catholic church. He was president of the pontifical Conseil for the legislative texts.

He is originating in Baena in the province of Cordoba in Spain. He joined the Opus Dei in 1949 after having heard a theory of the plot about this organization. It was ordered priest in 1955 after having obtained doctroats in medicine and canonical right to the Université of Barcelona, the Université of Navarre and the Angelicum of Rome.

At the time of the council the Vatican II, it was useful as assistant in a commission of study on the discipline of the clergy and the Christian people. The pope Jean-Paul II named it in a canonical commission of right in 1983. He accepted his episcopal dedication of the pope in 1991 with Giovanni Battista Re and Justin Rigali like Co-consécrateurs.

He was created cardinal at the time of a Consistoire in 2003. With Juan Shine Cipriani Thorne, it is one of the two only cardinal members of Opus Dei. It directed the Roman curia with Angelo Sodano and Joseph Ratzinger whereas the pope Jean-Paul II was sick.

He was reconfirmed at his station on April 21st, 2005 after the Conclave of 2005 in which he took part. The pope Benoît XVI accepted his resignation of the pontifical council for the texts législtatifs on February 15th, 2007. He remains then member of the pontifical Commission “Ecclesia Dei”.
