Jules Mousseron

Jules Mousseron (Denain, 1868 - 1943) is a poet of Picardy language and underground worker. He is particularly known to have created the character of Cafougnette.

Biography

Jules Mousseron was born the January 1868 with Denain ( Plat mining cottage ) in a family from minors; he works itself with the mine as of the twelve years age like galibot. When it meets in 1886 that which will become his wife, it starts to write worms for her, initially in French. But it is by writing texts in Rouchi that it presents in the local spectacles which it starts to know a certain success. It publishes its first collection Fleurs of in bottom in 1897.

It creates in 1899 the character of Cafougnette, which will gradually take importance in its work until becoming the central comic topic. The notoriety of Jules Mousseron extends then well beyond the area. It receives the academic Palmes in 1908. It multiplies the spectacles, but always works with the mine as a carpenter, and will remain there until its retirement in 1926.

Its last collection appears in 1933, date on which it practically ceases writing. It is made knight of the Légion of honor in 1936.

He dies in November 1943, in Denain.

The town of Denain materialized the character of Cafougnette by creating in 1950 a giant with its image.
