Jules Duval

Jules Duval , born with Rodez the April 30th 1813 and dead the September 20th 1870, is a lawyer, economist and journalist French. He was a savage partisan of the fourierism and colonization of the Algérie.

Biography

It is supposed to be a natural child of one of the most important families of notable of the Département of Aveyron. In 1836, it is one of the principal founders of the Société of the letters, sciences and arts of Aveyron. He is elected secretary within the office of this learned society.

The same year, it enters to the bar of its birthplace. Jules Duval, gained with the ideals fourierists, devotes the best of his time to his militancy. He counts among the first collaborators of Victor Considering at the School member and illustrates himself in his press. In 1847, after having resigned of its load of substitute, it goes to Algeria to direct the administration of a field based on “the association of work, from the capital and the talent”, the agricultural Union of Africa with Saint-Denis-of-Sig the, said “Union of Sig”, in an area (under Oran) which came to pacify Lamoricière. “Owner” of this imitation-phalanstery, Duval also makes the class with the children of the colonists and their sign in particular how “to clear the Sahara”, persuaded which it was to be able “to transform into one or in some generations deserts in fertile fields”. The things on the spot give him wrong; patient, it must give up his station.

Editor association of the Echo of Oran in 1852, member of the general advice of the province of Oran of 1858 with 1861, it returns to Paris to found there the French Economist , “body of the colonies, colonization and the social reform by the association and the improvement of the fate of the poor classes”. Vigorously opposed to the policy arabophile of Napoleon III, it is done, with the Saint-Simonian Auguste Warnier, the lawyer of the colonists in the columns of his weekly magazine or those of the Journal of the debates .

Faithful to the fourierists until the end, Jules Duval preaches among them moderation and realism. Its influence is large in the rows of the Société of geography, of which it chairs the central commission in 1868. This “convinced member” rents the virtues of colonization there, of the artesian wells in the wadi Rhir (area of Tougourt), of the trade through the desert, and the railroad like vector of civilization, preceding the idea of Transsaharien. He dies in 1870 in an accident of train during the Prussian invasion.
