Jules Carpentier

Jules Carpentier , born with Paris the August 30th 1851 and died in Joigny the June 30th 1921, is a French engineer, author of many inventions in the field of optics, photography and the cinema.
Biography
Wire of a trader, it makes his studies with the Louis-the-Large Lycée and enters in 1871 to the Polytechnic school. It leaves two years later engineer there manufactures of the State (tobaccos). He resigns in 1876 and joined the Compagnie of the railroad the Paris-Lyon-Mediterranean, initially like working apprentice, then at the end of ten months, like assistant of the principal engineer of the material.In 1878, with the death of the manufacturer Heinrich Daniel Ruhmkorff, it repurchases its workshops at the edge of the bankruptcy and in fact a flourishing company of construction of electricals appliance and magnetic. It is interested moreover in fixing of the musical improvisations by creating a keyboard recorder baptized mélographe, compound with the mélotrope for the execution of recorded works.
As from 1890, it is devoted to the cameras and the Cinématographe. It builds a photo-binocular with repetition thus, produces instruments of focometry and is interested in the shaping of the lenses and the optomécanique one. He is moreover the creator of the underwater Périscope and works with the development of the trichromatic process of Photographie color. He deposits the patent of the cinematograph and produces the apparatuses of the brothers Lumière.
He is elected free member of the Academy of Science in 1907 and he is honorary president of the French company of photography of 1909 to 1911, succeeding Jules Violle, of which he had been the pupil with the Louis-the-Large college. He is also president of the Trade union of electric industries, of the international Société of the electricians, the French Association for the advance of sciences and of the Company of the civil engineers, ancestor of the National council of the engineers and scientists of France. He is elected with the Bureau of longitudes in 1897. In 1907, it receives the cross of commander of the Légion of honor.
He dies in 1921 in an car accident with Joigny.
Jules Carpentier is the grandfather of the producer of television Gilbert Carpentier.
