Jules César Scaliger

Jules César Scaliger , celebrates scholar born the April 23rd 1484 with Vérone, dead on October 21st 1558 with Agen, was wire of Benoit Bordoni, painter in miniature. However, he claimed to go down from the noble house della Scala (from where the name which he took). He is the father of Joseph Juste Scaliger.

Biography

After having travelled much, it followed in France Antoine of Rovère , bishop of Agen (1525), was fixed near him as doctor, and obtained letters of naturalization. He initially wrote against the most famous scientists of his century, and started thus to be made a reputation that its real science and its many traditional work increased soon. He aimed to the reputation of universal man, and had knowledge in all the fields, but it is mainly as grammairien which he deserves his celebrity.

Works

One owes him, inter alia works: Of causis linguae latinae , Lyon, 1540, treated grammar conceived in a philosophical spirit: Poetices libri VII , Lyon, 1561, work full with scholarship, where it treats origin and goal of poetry and reviews the most famous poets; Of subtilitate, AD Cardanum , Paris, 1557; Latin translations of Greek works, in particular of the History of the animals of Aristote, Treated plants of Théophraste, Notes, Essays, Speeches. There are also to him Latin Poetries, but they are very poor (Geneva, 1574). The vanity of this scientist was excessive, and it did not save the insults with its adversaries; it had sharp arguments with Erasme about the Latinity of Cicéron.

Its last work before dying is: matter.
