Jules Bordet
Jules Jean-Baptiste Vincent Bordet (Soignies on June 13rd, 1870 in science - Brussels on April 6th, 1961 in science) is immunologist and a Belgian microbiologist .
The Bactérie S of the kind Bordetella owe him their name.
He became doctor of medicine in 1892 and began his work in the laboratory of Elie Metchnikoff with the Institut Pasteur of Paris. In 1894 it observed the white globules there phagocytant bacteria. In 1898, it described the Hémolyse of a blood serum exposed to red globules foreign.
It leaves Paris in 1900 to found the Pasteur Institute of Brussels. It discovered there that the bactericidal effect of the Anticorps specific assets is considerably improved in vivo by the presence of an element of the Sérum which it will name Alexine but which will be later named complement. This mechanism was used to develop a test serologic of tracking of the Syphilis, then its employment will be generalized with all the tests resting on the method of fixing additional used to detect a very great number of diseases today still.
In co-operation with Octave Gengou, it insulated the bacterium Bordetella pertussis (“bacillus of Bordet-Gengou”) in 1906 and formulated, rightly, the assumption that it was at the origin of the Coqueluche.
He became professor of bacteriology to the university of Brussels in 1907, he will teach his life there during. He becomes foreign member of the Royal Society in 1916.
Eminent pioneer of microbiology, Jules Bordet was the first Belgian scientist to see itself rewarded for the Nobel Prize of Physiology and Medicine in 1919 for his work on the mechanisms of immunity.
Solved federalist, it militated in the inter-war period for the promotion of Wallonia and French-speaking Belgium. In 1935, it is among the prizes winner of the quinquennial Price of the Friends of Hainaut, with Jules Destrée and Georges Lemaître.
In 1933, it will have to chair the Scientific advice of the Pasteur Institute of Paris.
It is buried with the Cimetière of Ixelles. He was freemason.
