Jules Barthelemy-Saint-Hilaire

Jules Barthelemy-Saint-Hilaire (August 19th 1805 with Paris - November 24th 1895) is a philosophical , journalist and statesman French.

Biography

Marie Belloc Lowndes, in the second volume of its autobiography Where Coils and Friendship Dwelt (1943), declares that Jules was an illegitimate son of Napoleon i. He had of it supposedly shame and would not have spoken about it, although everyone around him had known.

Between 1825 and 1828, it briefly works for the ministry for finances. It is an active political journalist, and of 1826 with 1830 it is opposed to the policy reactionary Charles X.

After 1830, it contributes to various newspapers, Constitutional the , the National and with the French Courrier until in 1833, then it gives up the policy in order to be devoted to the history of ancient philosophy and undertakes a translation of Aristote, which will occupy it most of its life (1837 - 1892). It withdraws from it a certain reputation, which enables him to obtain an ancient pulpit of philosophy to the Collège de France in 1838 and a seat with the Academy of Science morals and political in 1839.

After the Revolution of 1848, he is elected appointed republican of the department of Seine-et-Oise, but is obliged to withdraw after the coup d'etat of Louis Napoleon in 1851. In 1855, he is member of the international commission charged to study the project of Ferdinand de Lesseps of boring of the Suez Canal in Egypt. Its articles mainly contribute to make the project popular to France.

Elected official appointed in 1869, it joined the opposition to the Empire and, in 1871, it contributes to the election of Thiers, acting like its secretary. Named senator with life in 1875, it takes seat among the moderate republicans and, of September 23rd 1880 at November 14th 1881, he is Foreign Minister in the government Jules Ferry. The most important event of its administration is the annexation of Tunis in the form of a French protectorate, which it actively supported.

With its death in 1895, in addition to the translation of Aristote and several studies related to the same subject, it leaves a certain number of works, of which: Of Védas (1854), Of Buddhism (1856) and Mahomet and Coran (1865).
