Jules Alberoni

Jules Alberoni , in Italian Giulio Alberoni (May 21st 1664 - June 26th 1752) was an Italian cardinal and a Spanish statesman.

It was wire of a gardener of Firenzuola, close to Plaisance. It had its fortune with the duke of Vendôme, which it had known during the wars of Italy, and which it could like as much by his spirit sharp and enjoué that by his homosexual manners. It followed this lord in France, then accompanied it in Spain, and made known itself there advantageously Philippe V.

The duke of Parma having named it its political agent with Madrid, it succeeds in marrying a princess of the family of the duke, Elisabeth Farnèse, with king d' Espagne, and making move away the princess from Ursins, which had been up to that point very powerful and to which it had itself the greatest obligations.

The young queen made it name cardinal, Grand of Spain, and Prime Minister in 1715. Alberoni consequently formed vast intentions as well in favor of Spain as of the duchy of Parma, he wanted to place Philippe V on the throne of France and put all Europe moving. But the duke of Orleans, then regent, being leagued against him with the king d' Angleterre, thwarted all its projects, carried the war to Spain, obtained several advantages on ground and sea, and granted peace to Philippe V only in the condition that Alberoni would be returned. The Prime Minister accepted the order consequently to leave Spain (December 5th 1719).

Alberoni returned to Italy then wandered of city downtown because required on order of the pope Clément XI which was its rival. After the death of Clement XI, it went to Rome, where it took part in the election of the pope Innocent XIII which made examine its control at the request of Spain: it was locked up during four years in a convent; but as of 1723, it was restored in all its rights of cardinal; he enjoys even a rather great favor at the court of Rome, going until presenting himself to the pontifical election (he obtained ten votes) which saw the election of Benoît XIII. Clement XII elected in 1730, appointed it legate with Ravenne from where it tried the annexation of the republic of San Marin, disapproved by the Saint Sits, it was replaced in 1740 and it was withdrawn with Plaisance. It created there the Alberoni college which exists still then intended for the formation of modest priesthood of origin.
