Jules-Claude Ziegler (1804-1856), painter, ceramist and photographer of the French school
Biography
Jules Claude Ziegler was born on March 16th, 1804 with Langres. He studies the right against his liking and receives the title of doctor in right. In fact, it is more related to painting in spite of the reserves of his father Jean-Jacques Ziegler. He becomes the pupil of Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres and of François Joseph Heim. He is one of the first to be been interested in Spanish paintings, which he discovers in the Gallery of Louis-Philippe to Louvre, in the collection of the Soult Marshal, and at Alexandre Aguado; he then copies the Saint François of Zurbarán. He exposes several fabrics to the Living room, in particular Saint Georges embanking the dragon with the Musée of the Art schools of Nancy.Its main work is not other than the cupola of the church of the Madeleine in Paris, an exceptional realization, of three thousand square feet, removed with Paul Delaroche which was to carry out it; Adolphe Thiers, then Minister of Interior Department, trustful in Ziegler this enormous task, which requires two years of intesive work, until its completion in 1838. The subject represents Christ surrounded of the apostles and granting forgiveness to Marie-madeleine, knelt in the middle of the principal characters of the Church of the East and Occident; one discovers there the foundation and the development of the Catholic church (the iconographic program is very rich: one sees there also Mahomet, the wandering Jew, Luther, of many Roman Emperors, Charlemagne, Napoleon…). This masterpiece is worth the cross of the to him Légion of honor, but tired it and him because a disease of the eyes. With the beginning of the year 1840, it remains regularly in the family property of Haute-Marne, where it is devoted to ceramics and, among the first, with photography. It directs then a manufacture of sandstone vases in Voisinlieu, close to Beauvais in Oise. It returns to painting to the Living room of 1844 and three years painted later Judith celebrates it (museum of Lyon). Become preserving of the museum of Dijon and principal of the Art schools of the city, Ziegler dies brutally on December 22nd, 1856 in Paris. It is buried in the small village of its maternal ancestors, with Soyers in Haute-Marne.
