Jules-Charles Bozec

Jules-Charles Bozec (born in 1898 with Saint-Mayeux, in the department of the Coast-with Armor - died in 1973 with Mellionnec, Coast-with Armor) was a French sculptor of first half of the 20th century, whose work translates an attachment with the traditions of its native Brittany.

Biography

Jules-Charles Bozec made his studies with the school of the Art schools of Rennes, then with that of Paris. He was the pupil of Jean Boucher, to which he dedicated a deep respect interfered affection. He was also apprentice at the cabinetmaker Alfred Ély-Monbet with Caurel.

With, inter alia, Marcel Louët and Georges Robin, it belonged to the Breton artistic movement Seiz Breur , this pleiad of young artists who, in the Entre-deux-guerres, devoted to the restoration of the decorative Arts in Brittany. It was, in addition, one of the founders, with James Bouillé and Xavier de Langlais, of the Breton Atelier of Christian art “ An Droellen ”. He lived and worked with Mellionnec. Sculptor of reputation, it accepted many orders for the churches and vaults of Brittany in particular of the Bas-relief S for the furnace bridges, as well as war memorial the, built in great number during this time of the Entre-deux-guerres.

In 1927, in collaboration with the painter Rene-Yves Creston (1898 - 1964), it draws the costumes of three plays: “ Ar It hornandoned ” (Goblins) of the abbots Job Bayon and Yann-Vari Perrot, “ Tog Jani ” (the hat of Jeanne) of Yves Moal, and “ Lina ” of Roparz Hemon, of which the first representation took place in January 1927.

Some of works of Jules-Charles Bozec were published by the Faïencerie HB-Henriot of Quimper, whose activity goes up with 1690, among which “ the woman with the spade ” (v. 1930) - which is a reduction of “ the Earth ”, sculpture exposed to the Living room of 1927 - and a “ Méditation ”, taking again the bust of the “ Arracheuse of potatoes . ” This last part was republished in 2007 according to the original moulds of the Années 1930 and appears in the new catalog of the faience manufacture, in its collection of “ Blancs of Quimper . ”

At the time of an auction to the Hotel Drouot with Paris, another of its works - “ the Young girl with the umbrella ” - published by the HB-Henriot Faience manufacture reached the sum of: 3100 euros.

In 1937, it carries out the sculptures of the Chapelle of Koat-Keo to Scrignac (Finistere), built by his/her friend James Bouillé on the initiative of the abbot Perrot, founder of the Bleun-Brug , regarded as a significant example of the search for a modern Breton architectural creation.
