Judy Hakes

Judith Marjorie Hakes , is a Chanteuse, Compositrice and Musicien American, born on May 1st, 1939 with Seattle (the United States).

Biography

It had a training of traditional pianist, playing in public a concerto of Mozart at 13 years.

But it is the Musique Folk which interested it more, that of Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger. It started by playing in clubs with Greenwich Village (New York), then signed with Elektra which will be its recording company during 35 years.

Judy Collins carried out its first album has off Maid Constant Sorrow in 1961. Á its beginnings, it interpreted pieces of other type-setters, such as Pete Seeger, Phil Ochs, Jacques Brel (" Marieke") and Bob Dylan (" Mr. Tambourine Man"), or of the traditional songs. After this album, it signs a contract with Elektra Records.

By interpreting their compositions, it made it possible to make known other artists, like Leonard Cohen (" Bird one the wire") and Joni Mitchell (" Both sides now").

She was her first successes in 1967 with her album Wildflowers which included/understood its first compositions, but also " Both sides now" who will be #8 with the Billboard and for which it will receive a Grammy award in 1968.

Its following album Who Knows Where the Time Goes was produced in 1968 by Stephen Stills which was very in sight at that time with the super-group Crosby, Stills & Nash. Judy Collins is the " Judy" song " Continuation: Judy Blue Eyes" that Stephen Stills composed for the first album of Crosby, Stills & Nash.

During years 1970, it had solid reputation of singer of Folk, which did not prevent it from having a repertory more extended with for example of the songs of gospel as Amazing Grace which had an enormous success, or its own compositions like " My Father" album Who Knows Where The Time Goes? and " Born to the Breed" album Judith .

The album Judith diffused in 1975 includes/understands another pearl " Send in the clowns" (piece of the musical comedy " With little night music" produced with Broadway) for which it will have another Grammy Award.

Compilation So Early in the Spring - The first 15 years , left in 1977, is a collection of its best interpretations.

She wrote her memories and of the news in the years 1980, while continuing to record albums and to make concerts.

Judy Collins was an engaged artist, it became representing UNICEF, militant for the suppression of the mines. The suicide of his/her son Clark Taylor, after a long depression and a habituation with drug, led Judy to carry out a prevention campaign against the suicide.
