Arromanches is famous as place of battle during the unloading, in particular for the artificial harbor which was installed there. This port made it possible to unload 9.000 tons of material per day.It is on a beach of Arromanches that, at the time of the unloading of Normandy, the Allies established a provisional artificial harbor in order to allow the unloading of heavy material, without awaiting the conquest of deep water ports, such as Le Havre or Cherbourg.
This place was indeed selected in order to establish there the harbor structures essential to unloading of the quantities of supply necessary to the troops of invasion at the time of the unloading of June 1944. The British built enormous concrete boxes, the " Phoenix" who after to be towed English quays were to be assembled in order to form piers delimiting an artificial harbor, the Port Mulberry, including/understanding bridge connected to the ground by true floating roadways. One of these ports was assembled with Arromanches and, today still, some boxes " Phoenix" visible on the image testify to its solidity.
Some figures: June 12th, 1944, more than 300.000 men, 54.000 vehicles, 104.000 tons of supply were unloaded. During the 100 days of operation of the port, were unloaded: 2,5 million men, 500.000 vehicles, 4 million tons of material. The best performance of the port is in the last week of July 1944, during these seven days, the traffic of Arromanches exceeded 136.000 tons, that is to say 20.000 tons per day.
