Judeţe of Romania

The judeţe ( departments , judeţ in the singular), of the Latin judicium , former mayor in the historical areas of Romania ( primar in Rumanian modern), equivalent of the word judge in French, are administrative divisions of Romania.

History

Administrative division in judeţe exists since the 15th century. Each judeţ was led by a Jude , which had administrative and legal capacities. Modern administrative divisions were created according to the French model on the basis of department of the 19th century and each judeţ had a prefect who represented the government and a departmental council.

The Communists changed division on the Russian model of the Raion S , but in 1968, the French model was reintroduced. In 1981, the judeţe of Ilfov and Ialomiţa were reorganized to give the current configuration, with the judeţe of Giurgiu, Călăraşi, Ialomiţa and Ilfov. Until 1995, Ilfov was not a truth judeţ but depended on Bucharest, in the shape of a rural district.
