Judeţ de Mehedinţi

Mehedinţi is a Judeţ of Romania in Olténie. The chief town is Drobeta Turnu-Severin.

Etymology

Two origins of the word Mehedinţi are possible: one Latin which would make derive the name from an old Roman colony located in the judeţ close to Caraş-Severin known under the name of Medium ( medium), the other Hungarian woman who would make it derive from the word méhészkedés ( bee-keeping ). This second origin would be corroborated by bees in the escutcheon of the judeţ.
