Jost Amman

Jost (Jodocus) Amman (born in 1539 with Zurich, † in March 1591 with Nuremberg) is a draftsman, engraver and Germanic painter, which practiced all the forms of engraving (engraved wood, Taille-douce, Pointe dries, Eau-forte) and the technique in several treaties exposed some.

Biography

Amman, born in the any young person Swiss Confederation, emigrated in 1561 in Nuremberg, where it obtained the right of middle-class (1577), and where it passed the remainder of its life. It is, after Dürer, one of most eminent and most prolific the engraver S and Portraitiste S of the Holy roman Empire in XVIe century. It carried out many collections of boards engraved, in particular of the books of Héraldique and emblems, handbooks of tournament, treaties on the art of warfare, the Costume S, botany, the Remède S drawn from the plants, the animals and the Obstétrique. It took part as well in the illustration of the Bible as to that of works of old or contemporary authors. It illustrated also almanacs sets of themes dealing with subjects as various as the religion, the history, the seigneuriaux rights (and wood collects drives out), the carpentry or hunting. Its engravings are announced by the slim port and a little maniérée elegance of the characters. Its meticulous concern of the detail and its lively interest for the things of the daily life, like the trades and clothing, confer on its varied work a great historical value.
