Josiah Tongogara
Josiah Magama Tongogara (1938 - December 26th 1979) was a Politician of Southern Rhodesia and chief of the ZANLA, the military branches of ZANU.
It took part in the conference of peace which led to the Accords of Lancaster House, founders of the republic of Zimbabwe.
Serious potential candidate to become the first president of Zimbabwe, it dies in a mysterious car accident with the Mozambique the December 26th 1979.
Biography
Josiah Tongogara was born in 1938 on the arable lands from a farm belonging to Douglas Smith, the father of Ian Smith.It enters young person the combat against the domination of the white minority to Southern Rhodesia.
Member of the ZANU, chief of his military organization, it is shown to be implied in the death of his rival, the president of the ZANU, Herbert Chitepo in March 1975.
During the peace negotiations in 1979, he is regarded as a moderating element and tries to unify the rival rebel movements.
He dies the December 26th 1979 in a mysterious car accident.
A report/ratio of the CIA dated from the December 28th 1979 noted that Tongogara was a serious rival of Robert Mugabe, that it was popular and charismatic. The circumstances of died of Tongogara are still prone to polemic. In its memories, Ian Smith is convinced that they are close relations of Tongogara who are responsible for his death and confirms that the secret services rhodésiens leant for this possibility.
