Joshua Logan
Joshua Logan (October 5th 1908 - July 12th 1988) is a scenario writer and a director of theater and cinema with Broadway and Hollywood. Let us quote among its successes Mister Roberts, Picnic, and South Pacific .
Biography
Joshua Lockwood Logan III was born in Texarkana, Texas. It follows the courses of Culver Military Academy in Indiana before entering to the university of Princeton. Whereas it is student, Logan takes part in the creation of a theater company within the university with, inter alia actors, Henry Fonda and James Stewart. Before obtaining its diploma in 1931, it goes to Moscow to continue there its training near Constantin Stanislavski and to study there the Method.
In 1932, Logan begins its career of actor with Broadway. He collaborates with the producer David O. Selznick in Hollywood in 1936. When it goes back to Broadway, it writes and puts in scene two spectacles at success: One Borrowed Time and I Married year Angel . After the war, in which it takes part as an aviator in England, it marries the actress Nedda Harrigan in 1945.
Logan directs spectacles to Broadway: Annie Get Your Gun , John Coil Mary , Mister Roberts , South Pacific and Fanny . It obtains in 1950 Pullitzer Prize for Drama with Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II for South Pacific . The spectacle enables him to also obtain to a Tony Award better director.
When the realizer John Ford falls ill in 1955, Logan goes back definitively to Hollywood to finish Mister Roberts . Follow themselves from there: Picnic , Drunk Stop in 1956, Sayonara in 1957 and the film adaptation of South Pacific in 1958. It receives a Oscar for Picnic then another for Sayonara .
Its last musical comedies Street pedlar in 1967 and the Village fair of the west ( Paint Your Wagon ) in 1969 are failures which ring the knell of a style, even of a kind.
It publishes its autobiography in 1976 Josh: My Up-and-Down, In-and-Out Life . It appears with his wife in 1977 in the review Musical Moments . It publishes Movie Stars, Real People, and Me in 1978. Between 1983 and 1986, he teaches the theater in Florida Atlantic University with Boca Raton.
He dies in 1988 with New York.
