According to the biblical account, Joseph is the preferred son of his father Jacob/Israel. This one probably defers the love which it had for his preferred wife Rachel, died (with the birth of Benjamin), on their first wire. This preference of the father, who appears in the shape of a tunic offered in gift to his 17 years, involves the jealousy of the half-brothers of Joseph. The more so as Joseph tells them back-to-back the two dreams that it makes. In the first, eleven sheaves of the fields (representing his/her eleven half-brothers) are inclined in front of the sheaf of corn of Joseph. In the second dream, eleven stars (representing his/her eleven half-brothers), the sun (Jacob?) and the Moon (Lea?) prostrate in front of Joseph. The account of these two dreams does nothing but increase the jealousy of the brothers.

One day when Joseph joined his brothers left to make feed the herds, the brothers plot against him. The elder one, Ruben, does not wish that Joseph be killed. It rather will be stripped then thrown at the bottom of a well. Juda proposes to sell Joseph with a caravan of merchants ismaélites. For 20 silver coins, Joseph is taken along by Ismaélites to Egypt. His/her brothers use the tunic and of the blood of roe-deer to make accept the death of Joseph to their inconsolable Jacob father.

The interpretation of the dreams

Arrived to Egypt, Joseph is resold like servant with Putiphar, an officer of the Pharaon. He makes thrive his business and quickly becomes his intendant during several years. One day, Joseph refuses the advances of the woman of the officer; she then tells with her husband that he tried to sleep with her. Joseph is sent in prison.

Joseph divides his cell of prison with the Master wine waiter and the Master-panetier of the Pharaon. One morning, his/her two companions awake while having made a dream each one. Joseph interprets their dreams. He predicts to the Master-wine waiter that it will be cleared and that it will find his functions near the king. He predicts to the Master-panetier that he will be made slice the head. Three days later, these interpretations of the dreams are carried out.

The Master-wine waiter remembers Joseph only two years later when Pharaon makes a dream that none of its magi manages to interpret. Joseph left prison and interprets the premonitory Rêve which is given again under two different versions. The seven fatty cows (or full ears in the second version) which see Pharaon in his dream are seven years of plenty excessive that the area must know. The seven thin cows (or thin ears) are then seven years of dryness. In the dream, the seven thin cows absorb the fatty cows as the years of food shortage will make forget abundance. Joseph proposes that one uses excesses of the first years to make stocks for the years of dryness.

Pharaon is convinced by the remarks of Joseph and the met with the head of the country.

Become viceroy of Egypt

Joseph Marie with Asnath and has two children: Manassé and Éphraïm. After seven years during which Joseph organizes the accumulation of stocks, the famine falls down on all the area and leads the populations to come to Egypt to supply itself. Jacob sends all his wire thus (except Benjamin) to buy grain. Joseph recognizes them but his/her brothers do not recognize it because it changed much with the age and the pace from now on of a viceroy of Egypt. It makes show the 10 brothers of espionage and imprisons Siméon to oblige the others to return with the last of the brothers, Benjamin. When they return to Egypt, Joseph is moved to re-examine his little brother. He makes them set out again together but made place a cut in the bag of Benjamin to show them vol. Juda is devoted so that Benjamin can return near their father. Indicator that his/her brothers retained the lesson, Joseph reveals his identity with his brothers, then he forgives them ( it is God which made me come here ) and invites his father and all the family to come to settle in Egypt. He re-examines finally his father and submits it to the Court of Pharaon.

Jacob, the day before his death, fact of Manassé and Éphraïm his/her own children, then he blesses each one. Joseph and his brothers make bury Jacob with the Pays of Canaan. Joseph dies in 110 years. He is enbaumé as an Egyptian but its body will be brought back by the Jews at the time of the Exode.

Koranic tradition

The Coran mentions Joseph like a large prophet. Coran takes again the genealogy of the Genesis: he is the son of Jacob, grandson of Isaac and great-grandson of Abraham. The sourate 12 of the Coran bears its name and tells its history in an account which differs sometimes from that found in the Genèse.

One Joseph day known as: O my father! I saw eleven stars and the sun and the moon which were prosternaient in front of me.

O my child! he answered Jacob, takes care well not to tell your dream with your brothers, for fear they do not imagine against you some artifice, because Satan is the declared enemy of the man.

Thus God will take to you for his elected official and the interpretation of the events will teach you; it will fill you his benefits you and the family of Jacob, as it filled of it your aïeux formerly, Abraham and Isaac. Your Lord is erudite and wise.

Joseph and its brothers can be used as mark of divine kindness with those which want to be informed.

One day, his/her brothers said one to the other: Joseph and his Benjamin brother are more expensive with our father, and however we are more numerous. In truth our father is in an obvious error.

Kill Joseph, or move away to it some share; the glances of your father will be exclusively for you. Then you will act as men of goods.

The part which follows is very long; she explains how Joseph arrived to Egypt, how he was saved and how he became viceroy of Egypt because of his wisdom and his intelligence. At the end, Jacob finds his son.
