Joseph de Salm-Reifferscheidt-Dyck

Joseph Maria Franz Anton Hubert Ignaz of Salm-Reifferscheidt-Dyck , count then prince (1816) of Salm-Dyck, is a Botaniste and a Artiste German, born the September 4th 1773 with the castle of Dyck EIB Neuss close to Neuss and dead the March 21st 1861 with Nice.

Biography

Count de Salm-Dyck and of the Holy roman Empire until the peace of Lunéville, it is made prince de Salm by the king de Prusse in 1816. Divorced the countess of Hatzfeld, he marries in second weddings in 1803 the poetess Constance of Théis (1767 - 1845). He did not have a descent.

Under the Empire, he is an important character, member of the legislative Body, chancellor of the fourth troop of the Légion of honor, count of the Empire. Starting from 1809, Salm settle with the hotel of Ségur, 97 Rue of the Vat in Paris, where they receive a mixed but brilliant company.

Impassioned of botany, friend of Jussieu, Dreaded and Alexander von Humboldt, it is interested particularly in the succulent plants. Starting from 1800, it makes build greenhouses in its Château of Dyck, where it gathers one of the most beautiful collections of the time. It publishes many works of botany, in particular Monographia generum aloe and mesembryanthemi, iconibus illustrata (1835) and Cacteae in Horto Dickensi cultae (1850).

After its death, its collection survives to him partly, until the First World War, causing the stop of the heating of the greenhouses, does not carry to him a fatal blow.
