Joseph de Riquet de Caraman (1808-1886)

Joseph de Riquet de Caraman , 17th prince de Chimay, is a diplomat and industrial Belgian born in Paris the August 20th 1808 and died in London the March 12th 1886.

August 30th 1830, it marries in Paris Emilie Pellapra (1806 - 1871), widow in first weddings of the count de Brigode. They have four children:

  • Marie Therese Emilie (1832 - 1851), countess of Lagrange;

  • Marie '' Joseph '' Guy Henry Philippe (1836 - 1892) (ép. Marie de Montesquiou-Fezensac then Mathilde de Barandiaran);
  • Valentine (1839 - 1914), Princess Paul de Bauffremont then Princess Georges Bibesco;
  • Eugene (1847 - 1881) (ép. Louise de Graffenried-Villars).

It carries out the negotiation which leads to the treaty of friendship between the Netherlands and Belgium following the abjuration of prince d' Orange guaranteeing the independence of Belgium. It contributes to establish the diplomatic relations between the Kingdom of Belgium and the courses of Tuscany and Naples, the Vatican and the Germanic Confederation.

It finances the repair of the abbey of Chimay. In 1858, it takes the head of a consortium of shareholders who found the Company of Chimay, one of the first railroad companies Belgians.

The Parisian residence of Joseph de Riquet de Caraman is the hotel of Chimay, built by François Mansart, but strongly altered at the 18th century, located n° 15 Quai Malaquais. This hotel was sold in 1883 with the École of the Art schools.

In Belgium, it has the Château of Chimay. In 1863, it there made build by the architects Hector-Martin Lefuel and Cambon the theater, inspired by the theater Louis XV of Fontainebleau.
