Joseph Vendryes

Joseph Vendryes (1875 - 1960) linguist and Celtologue French. Raise Antoine Meillet, it taught with the practical École of the high studies, where it occupied the pulpit of languages and literatures Celtic. He also taught linguistics with the Faculty of Arts of the Université of Paris as from 1907 like with the National university (1920-1936)

Vendryes in particular developed the concepts of idiosynchronic linguistics and Idiolecte. For him, it is about the study of a system of signs, different according to the social groups but suitable for each one of those. By taking of account the study of linguistic systems of groups of speakers, linguistics is anchored a little more close to the linguistic practices while preserving the idea that the language as a system is essential on all like a cultural and modifiable heritage.

As a celtologist, it published inter alia a " Grammar of Old Irlandais" and an etymological Lexicon of old Irish whom it could not complete. It was interested moreover in the Celtic religion to which it devoted some works.

Joseph Vendryes was deputy manager of the Celtic Revue with Emile Ernault and Marie-Louise Sjoestedt when that was directed by Joseph Loth. After the death of this last on April 1st 1934, Joseph Vendryes founded the review Celtic Études .

He was member of the Académie of the inscriptions and the humanities.
