Joseph Sanguedolce

Joseph Sanguedolce was the mayor PCF of Saint-Etienne (the Loire) of 1977 with 1983. Minor, railwayman, trade unionist.

Resistance and deportation

Resulting from an emigrated family of Sicily which left initially for America.

Mobilized in 1940, he was prisoner of war in Germany to the Stalag VII-A until 1941, date on which he was repatriated at the request of the Collieries of the the Loire. In 1942, it created a group of resistant minors with the support of clandestine of the Communist youth of France and under the aegis of the Francs-tireurs and in favor (ftp) of which he became the departmental person in charge. It was stopped by the French police force on June 21st, 1943, imprisoned with the prison of Bellevue with Saint-Etienne then transferred to the Saint-Paul prison from Lyon by the authorities Collaboration nists. It was then placed at the central prison of Eysses to Villeneuve-sur-Lot (Lot-et-Garonne) where 1200 political prisoners had been gathered coming from the prisons from Lyon, Saint-Etienne, Montpellier and Narbonne. After the failure of an attempt at rising of the camp, on February 19th, 1944, it was transferred with its fellows-prisoner to the camp from Compiegne then delivered to the Germans and deportee to the concentration camp from Dachau. Over there, it was presented in the form of a " engineer mécanique". It could thus take part in clandestine operations intended to sabotage the local production within the workshops in which it had been requisitioned, moreover for the account of Kaufberen, subsidiary of BMW, which contributed to the project of the rockets V1 and V2.

After the release of the camp of Dachau by VIIe armed states-unienne, Joseph Sanguedolce could turn over in his family, with Rock-the-Molière, in June 1945.

His/her brother Vincent Sanguedolce was killed by the S in 1944.

A political commitment

After the Release, Joseph Sanguedolce was very implied in the militant local political life and the trade-union activity.

Elected official initially on a municipal list with Rock-the-Molière, it was elected mayor of Saint-Etienne within the framework of a list of Union of the Left in 1977. Scoffed for his modest social origin by his political adversaries, Joseph Sanguedolce was nevertheless very popular in Saint-Etienne during his six years municipal mandate, in spite of the serious economic difficulties of the moment (closing of Manufrance) and of various obstacles met on his way, such as the scandal of the black case of the president of the ADZE, which is concluded by the descent from the famous football team in the second division, in 1984.

An assessment of its municipal action

Because of property of part of the actions of Manufrance bequeathed to the town hall by the founder of the company, Etienne Mimard, it had to manage as a communist mayor and a shareholder the difficulties of the company. and to carry out a loan in Switzerland within this framework. It tried to be opposed to the resumption of Manufrance by Bernard Tapie, which it did not estimate. In spite of its efforts, it could not avoid the liquidation of Manufrance, after the transformation into co-operative.

The surveys gave it gaining to a few months of the local elections of 1983, it was however beaten by its adversary François Dubanchet.

For the inhabitants of Saint-Etienne, this former minor, who knew an exceptional course, and represented the very strong values of work in mentalities, remained extremely popular.
