Joseph Radetzky
Joseph Wenzel Radetzky von Radetz (in Czech: Jan Josef Václav hrabě Radecký Z Radče ), usually called count Joseph Radetzky , was an Austrian marshal of Czech ascent, born the November 2nd 1766 in Trebnitz (auj. Trebenice, Bohemia), dead the January 5th 1858 with Milan.
Commander-in-chief of the Austrian army in Lombardo-Vénitie, it was in charge of the re-establishment of the order following the revolutions of 1848 which shook the empire of Austria. It carried out several battles in 1848 and 1849 (Santa Lucia, May 6th, 1848; Vicenza, June 10th, 1848; Custoza, July 25th, 1848; Mortara and Novara, March 1849).
It was, with Schwartzenberg and Windischgrätz, one of the principal craftsmen of the Reaction in Spring of the People in the empire of Austria, which led to the “Bach System”.
It inspired Johann Strauss Père for his Marche of Radetzky interpreted traditionally each year in closure Concert of the New year in Vienna.
