Joseph Laniel

Joseph Laniel , born the October 12th 1889 with Vimoutiers (Flowering ash), dead the April 8th 1975 in Paris, was a Politician French.

Biography

Industrialist, it is Député of the Calvados of 1932 with 1958. Under-secretary of State to Finances in the Government Paul Reynaud in 1940. He votes the full powerss with Pétain in July 1940. However, it becomes then resistant and takes part in the foundation of the National council of Resistance. The August 26th 1944, it is at the sides of De Gaulle and Georges Bidault at the time of the procession on the Fields-Elysées. It founds in 1945 the Republican party of the Freedom (PRL) which will amalgamate with the Independent ones.

With the government

He exerted then the functions of President of the Council of the ministers in two successive governments:

Its government is confronted with social agitation, with the deep division of the opinion vis-a-vis CED and to the aggravation of the Indochinese conflict. At the end of its first mandate, it is candidate with the presidency of the Republic to the 11th turn, arrives at the head of 5th at the 11th turn, but is withdrawn in front of its failure. The military disaster of Diên Biên Phu causes the fall of its government.

In practice, many is the observers to quote the two governments of Joseph Laniel like constituting some one, but it is in fact that the January 16th 1954, as it is of use after the election of new a President of the Republic, Joseph Laniel gave the resignation of his government to Rene Coty which had just succeeded Vincent Auriol. The new president of the Republic took back at once Joseph Laniel and the whole of the government in their functions, but, formally, there were two successive governments well.
