Joseph Lagrosillière

Marie-Samuel Joseph Lagrosillière (1872-1950), founder of the socialist movement in Martinique, is one of the political figures most important of the island in first half of the 20th century, with the image of Hégésippe Jean Légitimus in Guadeloupe.

Biography

Joseph Lagrosillière was born on October 20th, 1872 with Sainte-Marie (Martinique). He carries out in France of the studies of Right, then in 1901, on its return in the island, is registered as Avocat with the bar of Fort-de-France. The same year it creates the first Socialiste federation in Martinique. Then it founds the newspaper " Prolétaire" he is also editor association.

1902: Joseph Lagrosillière is candidate with Legislative in the Northern district, but because of the eruption of the Peeled Mountain the second round does not take place. Its family is decimated in the catastrophe. Demoralized, it settles during 2 years with Saint-Pierre-and-Miquelon.

1910: He is elected Député in North (he will be re-elected in 1914). With the municipal elections, he is elected Maire of Sainte-Marie; it will remain with the head of the city during 26 years.

1914: Joseph Lagrosillière, in dissension with the French socialist deputies on the question of the assimilation, resigns of the socialist group to the House of Commons.

1915: Savage partisan of the assimilation, Lagrosillière in company of the Deputy inhabitant of Guadeloupe Rene Boisneuf presents without success to the House of Commons a bill tending to transform the West-Indian colonies into French department.

1919: He concludes an political alliance with Fernand Clerc from the party of the Factory to the " banquet of Holy-Marie" for the Legislative following ones. He is elected for five years Député in the South. The same year it becomes President of the General advice, that it will chair until 1939.

1925: He is imprisoned after the municipal elections and the strike of 1925 for incentive to the disorder and violence.

1931: Joseph Lagrosillière is stopped for " traffic of influence" and écroué in Le Havre in France.

1932: In spite of its legal contentions, he is triumphantly elected again Député in the South. It will remain it until the beginning of the second world war.

1945: Joseph Lagrosillière delivers his last political battle to Fort-de-France, where it is severely beaten by the young Communist candidate Aimé Césaire who outdistances it of more than 5000 votes.

1950: He dies on January 6th at the 78 years age.
