Flights carried outAs a pilot of the US Air Force, it takes part in the program of the X-15, and by three times (during flights 138,145 and 153) it will bring the rocket beyond the altitude of 80 km, which are the exospheric limit of space according to the US Air Force. This limit being recognized internationally with 100 km, these flights will not make it recognize as astronaut (contrary to its counterpart Joseph Albert Walker).
After having joined NASA, it will first of all accomplish 3 trial flights atmospheric on board the Space shuttle Enterprise in company of Richard H. Truly, then it will take part in 2 space flights:
- November 12th 1981: it orders the second flight of the shuttle Columbia
- August 27th 1985: he is commander on the flight Discovery 51-L
