Biography

Militant during his youth with the Youth Christian coed, it becomes after his Baccalauréat doctor in right and graduate of the École of the high commercial studies. Called in the building sites of youth, it is refractory with STO and rejoins the free French Forces via Spain, after several months captive of a camp of internment. It takes part in the Débarquement in Provence and the Countryside of Germany. He is general secretary of MRP in 1948.

He takes part in the creation of MRP in Savoy and becomes responsible for the economic questions for this party. He will be the general secretary. Member of the Parliament of the French Union in 1952 then appointed Savoy in 1956, it is re-elected at the time of all the legislative elections until in 1973.

Mayor of Saint-Martin-of-Belleville, it was general adviser of Savoy of 1951 with 1976 and chaired the departmental assembly of 1964 1976. Joseph Fontanet continues the tourist equipment of Tarentaise, in particular Val Thorens.

Joseph Fontanet exerted many ministerial functions: first of all principal private secretary of Jules Catoire, Secretary of State to Health, the end of the Forties, he is Secretary of State to the industry and the trade of the January 8th to the November 17th 1959 in the government Michel Debré near the minister Jean-Marcel Jeanneney. Minister for the Public health and the population as of the April 14th 1962 in the government of Georges Pompidou, it resigns the May 16th according to after the press conference of the Général de Gaulle on Europe with other ministers MRP.

Member of the Center democracy and progress, he is population and employment, Minister for Labor in the cabinet Jacques Chaban-Delmas of the June 20th 1969 with the July 5th 1972, then Minister for State education of Pierre Messmer of the July 5th 1972 with the May 27th 1974. During the presidential campaign, it lines up at the side of Jacques Chaban-Delmas and seems its possible Prime Minister in the event of victory. He is opposed thus to Jacques Chirac and Valery Giscard d'Estaing.

Its former substitute Georges Peizerat resigns as soon as Joseph Fontanet is not taken back with the government. He is however beaten the October 6th 1974 by the Socialist Maurice Blanc at the time of a by-election, whereas he tries to find his seat with the National Assembly.

In 1977, it directs the newspaper I inform , desired as competitor with the newspaper Le Monde but holds only a few months. He then becomes manager of companies in the field of the services to the local government agencies.

The 1980, shortly after midnight, from unknown in the car draw to him above. He dies the following day at the Laënnec Hospital. Members of the “band with Therese”, a group of shadies killing by defect, were stopped a little later but the two ballistic expertises are formal: it is not their weapon which killed Joseph Fontanet. However the investigation, having already been closed, was not reopened. In the years 1990, the police superintendent who had followed the business will mention that a prisoner had praised himself in prison near his fellow-prisoner to have killed Joseph Fontanet whereas it was put at the challenge by his band to kill a passer by. This assertion is unverifiable, the prisoner in question being committed suicide in 1983.
