Joseph Fesch

The cardinal Joseph Fesch was a man of the church French, archbishop of Lyon of 1802 with 1836.

Born with Ajaccio the January 3rd 1763, it died in Rome the May 13rd 1839. He was the son of François Fesch, officer Suisse with the service of Genoa, and Angele-Marie Pietra-Santa (Widow of Jean-Jerome Ramolino of which it have a girl, Lætitia Bonaparte, the mother of the Emperor, which thus makes of Joseph Fesch the uncle of Napoleon Bonaparte).

After studies with the college of Aix-en-Provence, it entered the orders. At the time when the Révolution burst, he was archdeacon and provost of the chapter of Ajaccio.

In 1802, its nephew the Napoleon emperor constituted a diocese to him to measure, joining together the departments of the the Rhone, the the Loire and the Ain, and sitting at Lyon. It then became archbishop of Lyon. It calls then Gaspard-Andre Jauffret as general vicar

It was named cardinal in 1803, then sent as ambassador to the court of Rome. In 1805, it was high with dignities of large chaplain of the Empire, count and senator. It did not fear, in 1810, to be opposed to the wills of Napoleon with regard to Pie VII. Fallen in disgrace, it was withdrawn in its diocese, where it remained until in 1814.

After the abdication of the Emperor, it went to live in Rome where it spent his last days in the study of the letters and arts, without never wanting agree to dislocate itself of its archbishop's palace.

In 1822, the pope Black and white VII redimensionna the diocese of Lyon on the level of the department.

It had trained a rich person collection of tables: it bequeathed 1200 of them to the town of Ajaccio.
