Joseph Deiss
Joseph Deiss , born the January 18th 1946 with Freiburg, originating in Zeihen, is an economist and politician Suisse. Member of the Left Christian-Democrat, it is federal adviser of 1999 with 2006.
He is married and has 3 children.
Professional path
In 1971, it obtains a Doctorat in economic scenes and social. It will make research with the King' S College of the Université of Cambridge, then becomes part-time lecturer of economy political with the Université of Freiburg in 1973. It will teach there until in 1977. It is appointed extraordinary professor in 1983 then ordinary professor of political economy and economic policy in 1984. He is senior of the faculty of the economic scenes and social of 1996 with 1998. During the construction of the new buildings sheltering this faculty, its name is given to the largest audience. He is married in Babette Deiss, since 1972, woman whom he met with a university ball, when both were students. As from the month of March 2007, he will teach again at the University of Freiburg, as an invited professor.
Political course
Member of the Party Christian-Democrat, it is appointed with the Grand the Council Freibourgese of 1981 with 1991, year during which he is the president. Of 1982 with 1996, he is also syndic of the commune of Barberêche. Of 1991 at 1999, it sits at the National council of which he is vice-president of the commission of foreign policy in 1995 - 1996. He is appointed with the monitoring of the prices of 1993 with 1996 ( Mister price ) then becomes president of the commission of the National council for the total revision of the constitution which is adopted the April 18th 1999.
Foreign Minister
Elected the Federal council, like representative of the canton of Freiburg, the March 11th 1999 (with a voice in advance on its rival Christian-Democrat Peter Hess), it succeeds Flavio Cotti with the head of the federal department of the foreign affairs on May 1st, 1999. This period sees Switzerland adhering to UNO (September 10th 2002). He manages to be re-elected to the Federal council the December 10th 2003, in spite of the loss of a seat by his party, by overriding Ruth Metzler-Arnold during the renewal of the government.
Minister for the economy
January 1st, 2004, it takes again the federal department of the economy, with the head of which it succeeds Pascal Couchepin, whereas the foreign affairs are taken again by Micheline Calmy-Rey. It is confronted there with weak the Economic growth, with the rise of the Chômage, in particular of the young people, and with the change of the Swiss Agriculture. It successfully defends the extension of the bilateral agreements on the free-circulation of the people to the 10 novel members of the European Union and seeks without success to conclude an agreement from Libre-échange with the the United States.It is president of the Confederation of January 1st with the December 31st 2004 and pays in particular a visit noticed with the Japan. It receives with Bern the Polish president Aleksander Kwaśniewski.
Surprised resignation
The April 27th 2006, it announces with the general surprise its resignation of the Federal council to the July 31st. It specifies to want to leave whereas all is well and without pressure of its party and to leave the place to new forces . This decision, acknowledges it, matured all alone during the holidays of Easter.
