Joseph Decaisne
Joseph Decaisne , born with Brussels the March 7th 1807 and died in Paris the February 8th 1882, is a Botaniste French of Belgian origin .
Biography
Although Belgian of birth, it carried on his activity exclusively in Paris. He enters in 1824 as gardener to the national Muséum of natural history and becomes, in 1832, chief of the “square of sowings”. He becomes the assistance-naturalist of the pulpit of rural botany of Adrien de Jussieu (1797-1853). It is there that it starts to study the plants brought back by various travellers like those of Victor Jacquemont (1801-1832) in Asia. It is also interested in the Algue S, but it is mainly about applied research, in particular on the garance, the Igname and the Ramie.In 1847, it is elected member of the Academy of Science, of which he is president in 1865. It succeeds in 1850 Charles-François Brisseau de Mirbel (1776-1854) the pulpit of culture of the Natural history museum. It takes part in 1854 in the creation of the botanical Société of France.
Between 1858 and 1875, it writes a work in 9 volumes the Orchard of the Museum , whose 6 volumes describe approximately 400 varieties of Poire.
Joseph Decaisne became foreign member of the Royal Society the December 13rd 1877.
