Teodor Józef Konrad Korzeniowski h. Nałęcz writer Polish of English language, which will take the name of Joseph Conrad . Born the December 3rd 1857 with Berditchev under Russian occupation today in Ukraine, it belonged to a family of the Polish nobility (Szlachta). It is a Romance great writer mixing maritime, Philosophie and traditionalism Polish. He is regarded as one of the most brilliant writers of English language. He is deceased the August 3rd 1924.
Orphan at ten years (his father had just died in exile, after being driven out following the insurrection of 1863, in which he had taken part) and entrusted to an uncle which remained with Cracow, Conrad felt soon attracted irresistibly by the adventure. At seventeen years, he becomes sailor and embarks like foams on a sailing French with Marseilles. There will remain three years in the French Marine to enter then the Merchant navy British, where he was going to remain during more than sixteen years. Promoted Captain with the long course, in 1884, it was made naturalize Britannique. Conrad spoke with an equal facility Polish, German, French and English; but it decided to write in the language of its new fatherland. In 1890, he works for the State independent of Congo. In 1896, despairing to find a command, there writes with a friend “he remains to me only the literature like means of existence”, and clearly states to write for the money… The same year, it remains in Brittany during a few months (the life is less expensive with Lannion and the Island-Large that with London) and there written some of its texts.
Francis Ford Coppola took as a starting point '' In the middle of darkness '' for the scenario of its film Apocalypse Now .
A writing
In 1896, it published its first book, the Madness Almayer , where it depicts the perdition of a Westerner in Malaysia. Consequently appear regularly of other books, increasingly more noticed by the well-read men and soon by the general public. However, Conrad will be never business success, thing of which it always had evil to include/understand the reason, undoubtedly the too great complexity of its work. All its life of author it affirmed to want to write for the general public, and leaves a considerable work, in particular the Negro of the Narcisse , Lord Jim , Jeunesse , In the middle of darkness , Typhon , the Mirror of the Sea , Under the eyes of the Occident , the Secret agent , Victoire .
It is often classified as author of “novels of sea”, but it is as restrictive as that would be it for Melville under pretext that this one is especially known for Moby Dick . In fact, In the middle of darkness , Lord Jim , the secret agent , Under the eyes of occident , Victoire , are large the, dark ones and (unequally) deep novels, but do not happen at sea…
Some look at Conrad like a precursor of the Existentialisme; its characters fallible, are disillusioned, but never give up facing the life.
Conrad usually spoke French, but, detail amusing, it spoke it with a Marseille accent, having learned it at the time of its stay in the city phocéenne. André Gide was his intercessor in the French literary circle. He translated itself Typhon .
