Joseph Calasanz

Joseph Calasanz or Calasanctius - 1556 - 1648 is the founder of the Piaristes, religious Congrégation intended for education.

Life

Joseph Calasanz was born with the castle from Calasanz, close to Peralta of Sal, in Aragon (Spain). His/her parents, Gift Pedro Calasanza and Donna Maria Gaston gave him an excellent education, at the house initially, then at the school of Peralta. He was the junior by the five children of the family.

After its traditional studies, he learned philosophy and jurisprudence with Lerida and obtained the diploma for the occupation of doctor in Right. He supplemented then his theological studies with Valence and Alcalá de Henares.

With died of his/her mother and one of her brothers, his father, Gift Pedro, wished that it Marie and can perpetuate the family line. But a very serious disease which failed to carry it, in 1582 broke these projects and once cured, Joseph Calasanz was ordered priest on December 17th 1583 by the bishop of Urgel, Hugo Ambrosio de Moncada.

Joseph began his ministry in the diocese of Albarracin where the bishop of Figuera entrusted to him the load of theologist, confessor and procurator. When the bishop was transferred to Lerida, Joseph followed it in his new diocese.

In 1586, of Figuera was sent like apostolic visitor to the abbey of Montserrat and Joseph accompanied it as a secretary. The bishop died the following year, and Joseph left, although it was highly asked to him to remain. After having gone on a fast journey in Calasanz for funerals of his father, it was called by the bishop of Urgel to be a general vicar of the district of Tremp.

In 1592, Joseph embarked for Rome, where it found a guard in the person of the cardinal Marcoantonio Colonna, who chooses it as personal and educational theologist of his nephew. Rome was the ideal ground for the setting in charity organization, so much the instruction of the children poor and wandering was neglected. Much was orphan and without the least instruction. Joseph joined a confraternity of Christian doctrines, and gathered the children of the streets to take them along to the school. The professors, already very little remunerated, refused to accommodate this extra work of work.

Antonio Brendani, Pasteur de Santa Dorotea, offered two parts to him and promised to him to help it for the teaching of these unhappy. Later on, two other priests offered to him of the assistance. Thus in 1597, Joseph Calasanz could open the first free school in Europe.

The Pope Clément VIII offered an annual allocation, and other personalities made gifts, which allowed Joseph, accommodate many children. In 1602, it rented a house with San Andrea della Valle and installed the community of there the Order of the Black and white Schools, or Piaristes.

It had to fight against a strong opposition, towards him and its institute, but it overcame these difficulties. In 1612 its school was transferred to the Torres Palate, close to San Pantaleone, it is there that Joseph finished his life in the middle of the lost children to which he had devoted all his life.

He died on August 25th 1648 with Rome.

Beatification - Canonization

  • It was béatifié on August 7th 1748

  • And was canonized by the Pope Clément XIII on July 16th 1767
