Joseph Boze , born with Martigues on February 7th, 1745, died in Paris on January 25th, 1825, is a painter of portraits and pastellist.

Biography

As of childhood Joseph Boze shows provisions for the drawing and enters at 17 years to the practical school of drawing of Marseilles. According to the Volcy-Boze biographer, it follows to Paris the teaching of Maurice Quentin of the Tower.

Appointed patented painter of the war under Louis XVI, it makes his career by carrying out several portraits of the members of the court of which the king. Under the revolution it paints several member of the third state and convention in particular those of Mirabeau, Robespierre and Marat.

After having testified at the time of the lawsuit in favor of Marie Antoinette it is stopped and locked up with the Caretaker's lodge, the fall of Robespierre avoids the scaffold to him. To its release it leaves for Holland and then for England. It returns to Paris in 1798 and continuous its career until 1825 goes back to its death.

Anecdocte

  • Boze in June 1780 carried out the test with the assistance of Jacques de Vaucanson of a brake on a horse-drawn vehicle. Several localitées escarpées were selected for this experiment: Chaillot, then Pecq.
