His/her parents (Salvatore Bonanno and Catarina Bonventre) emigrate in the United States whereas the Joseph young person is only one year old. They settle in Brooklyn where Salvatore opens a bar-restaurant. In 1911, Salvatore is recalled by his/her brothers in Sicily where the family businesses are threatened by a rival family. He is sent the year according to in a college to Palermo.
In 1922, Benito Mussolini arrives at the capacity and takes drastic measures to fight against the Maffia. Hundreds of Sicilians are stopped, tortured or carried out, among them much of innocent.

It is starting from Cuba that Joseph launches out in smuggling between the island and Florida. To final, it goes back to Brooklyn, close to Roebling Street and Metropolitan Avenue, where it had grown. It is then 19 years old and lives with his uncle hairdresser Peter Bonventre. He attends the gangster medium, from which many members result from Castellammare, his native village. He makes flights and interferes himself faked plays of lotto.
The " war castellammaraise"
In the gangster medium, Bonanno was noticed by its pars like having good competences as regards organization and was equipped with a certain sense of smell. It is implied more and more in Brooklyn, where the increase in the number of Castellammarais ends up worrying “ Joe the Boss ” Masseria, one of the chief of the Maffia New Yorkean. Castellammarais have a general headquarter installed with North Williamsburg, where them chief, Salvatore Maranzano, direct the Maffia of Brooklyn under the orders of Gift Vito Cascio Ferro, the chief of the Maffia Sicilian.
In 1927, the two rival factions, those of Masseria and Maranzano, will clash. The conflict, qualified " war castellamaraise" , will last four years.
In 1930, lieutenants de Maranzano are Joseph Bonanno, Joseph Profaci, Thomas Lucchese but also Joseph Magliocco, like and Gaetano Gagliano, member of another gangster group of Buffalo combined in Castellammarais. Maranzano then exposes its peace plan in front of the whole of the gangster chiefs of the USA. It then revolutionizes the traditional vision of the organization of the Maffias Italian-American. It divides the activities of 24 territories directed by 24 different families, each one electing her own boss. New York will count five then " familles" :
