Joseph Black was born with Bordeaux, in France, and made his studies at the universities of Glasgow and Edinburgh, in Scotland. He taught the Chimie, the Médecine and the Anatomie at the university of Glasgow of 1756 with 1766, then chemistry at the university of Edinburgh.

Towards 1754, it discovers the Carbon dioxide, which it calls air fixes , putting at evil the Théorie phlogiston still taught with this époque.
In 1755, it recognized the Magnésium like a élément.
In 1761, it discovers the phenomenon of the Latent heat i.e. the heat transfers related to fusion or with the evaporation of a substance and, three years later, it measures the Latent heat of the steam. Its pupil and assistant James Watt improved later the first Steam engine.

Its Leçons of chemistry was published in 1803, 2 volumes in-8. It was associated Institut of France.
