Joseph Bienaimé Caventou
Joseph Bienaimé Caventou (1795 - 1877) is a French pharmacist. He worked in close cooperation with Joseph Pelletier during 25 years (1817-1842). This team was pionnière in the use of Solvant S light to isolate the active ingredients from the plants.
The two pharmacists concentrated on the study of the Alcaloïde S of the plants. One owes them the insulation of the following components:
- 1817 : the Chlorophyl, the émétine starting from Ipecacuanha
- 1818: the Strychnin starting from Nux vomica
- 1819: the Brucine starting from Nux vomica
- 1820: the Cinchonin and the Quinine starting from bark of Cinchona
- 1821: the Cafeine
They créerent their own factory to produce quinine used to treat the Malaria but published their discovery in order to allow his broader diffusion.
