Joseph-François Perrault

Joseph-François Perreault (1753 with Quebec - 1844) is a politician Québécois

In 1796, it is implied in the political life and is elected appointed Comté of Huntingdon to the Chambre from assembly of Low-Canada. It is there that he proposes for the first time his project of establishment of public schools.

Its major engagement in the field of education was worth to him the nickname of father of the education of the Canadian people. Its efforts in order to promote free and obligatory education for all were perhaps in advance over its time, but they would trace, all the same, the way to be followed for the following generations.

In spite of its attachment with the Catholic religion, it always supported religious neutrality as regards education.

It was freemason.

Regarded by several as the father of state education in Canada.

Today several schools in Canada bear its name. In Quebec, there exist two secondary schools called secondary École Joseph-François-Perrault : that of Quebec and that of Montreal, with its recognized musical vocation and its program of international studies.
