Joseph-Ernest Van Roey
Cardinal Joseph-Ernest Van Roey (Vorselaar, January 13rd 1874 - Malignant, August 6th 1961), Secular Prelate Belgian of the Roman Catholic church, primacy of Belgium, 17th Archbishop of Malignant (1926 - 1961).
Biography
Joseph Ernest Van Roey was born in Vorselaar on January 13rd, 1874, elder of Stanislas Van Roey and Anne-Marie Bartholomeus.It was named archbishop of Malines on March 12th, 1926 shortly after the death of its predecessor the cardinal Desired-Joseph Mercier.
Raised cardinalat in 1927, holder of Santa-Maria-in-Aracoeli, it played a big role in the Belgian public life in the years which preceded the war. In 1937, at the time of the by-election in Brussels caused by Leon Degrelle, his vigorous support in favor of the candidate of the traditional parties, Paul van Zeeland, played a determining role in the collapse of the party rexist. Its ministry, which lasted more than 35 years, saw proceeding the second world war,
Clashes of the royal business, confrontations of the school war and Congolese decolonization, all occasions made profitable by the primacy of Belgium, in order to impose its point of view. The cardinal Van Roey was the standard image of a prelate of the Church préconciliaire. He died on August 6th, 1961 and its successor was his auxiliary bishop Leon-Joseph Suenens.
