Joseph-Benoit Suvée

Joseph Benoît Suvée (born with Brugge the January 3rd 1743, died with Rome the February 9th 1807) is a Belgian painter, strongly marked by the culture French Néoclassique. As such he was the follower and the competitor of David who dedicated a persistent hatred to him.

First of all raises Matthias de Visch. It came to France at the age nineteen years and was the pupil of Jean-Jacques Bachelier. In 1771, it obtained the Prix of Rome. In the Eternal City of 1772 to 1778, it prolonged there the duration of the normal stay of the boarders of the Académie from France to Rome. Of return to Paris, it was named academician. Placed in Louvre, it opened an art school for young girls.

Named in 1792, director of the Académie from France to Rome, to replace François-Guillaume Ménageot, it is not that in 1801 qu ' it could take his station after being imprisoned some time with the Prison Saint-Lazare.

He knew a brilliant career, and became director of the Villa Médicis in Rome, where he died. After six years of stay to Rome, it died there suddenly.
