Jose Sanjurjo Sacanell (Pampelune, March 28th 1872 - Estoril, Portugal, July 20th 1936), marquis of Rif, was a nationalist soldier Spanish during the Guerre of Spain.

Biography

Jose Sanjurjo was born with Pampelune in 1872. It enters the army and takes part in the war against the the United States with Cuba in 1896 then joined the Spanish army with the Morocco starting from 1909 and takes part in 1921 in the reconquest of Melilla.

Thereafter, Spanish high commissioner in Morocco, it is promoted Lieutenant-General and, in 1928, takes the direction of the Guardia Civil .

In 1931, for its action during the War of Rif, it receives the large cross of Charles III by King Alphonse XIII.

Sanjurjo accommodates with benevolence the advent of the République in 1931 and he is the first soldier high graded to place itself under the orders of the revolutionary committee of the republic. However, it is quickly disappointed when the president Manuel Azaña withdraws the direction of the guardia to him civil to replace it by the general Miguel Cabanellas then dismisses it direction of the officers of customs.

In 1932, it does not await anything any more the new mode and approaches the Carliste S. It tries a Coup d'etat (the sanjurjada ) to Seville and Madrid against the government. It fails and is stopped, considered and condemned to death. The sorrow is commuted to prison with perpetuity but it is finally released in March 1934 by the government of Alejandro Lerroux and is sent in exile to Estoril to the Portugal.

In February 1936, the Spanish Popular front carries the general elections.

In spring 1936, Sanjurjo plots with the generals Emilio Mola, Francisco Franco and Gonzalo Queipo de Llano with an aim of reversing the government.

The July 17th 1936, the rising of the nationalist generals marks the beginning of the Spanish civil war.

The July 20th 1936, Sanjurjo is killed in the crash landing of the plane too charged in luggage which was to bring back it to Spain to take the military command of the insurrection. This incident has conduit has many rumors affirming that the death of the Sanjurjo general was caused by the Franco general.
